1. The first way in which Raizman defined design refers to "the elements of a work of art and an awareness of the order and arrangement of those elements." In other words, all the unique pieces and parts in designing a work of art and how those pieces work together in unity.
Secondly, he defines design as "the conception for the completed form of an object, often a sketch, model, or set of instructions that is a preliminary stage in the process that leads to a finished product." In other words, this is the process of making a dream or idea a reality.
2. It is so difficult to just throw about the term 'modern' or 'modern design' because there are so many different definitions and everyone has a different take on just what it is to be modern. This is why one should state which type of modern they're referring to and back it up with references.
Some of the many different definitions of modern design are:a) Design beginning at the time of the IR when emchanized and mass production techniques were introducedb) The movement which refers to design fro mthe end of the 1930s on, which started with very stark design inspirted by industrial production.c) People may get confused and think you are speaking of just design (not nessasarily modern design) which brings about more definitions such as:
I) Making an idea a reality
II) The componants of design to make a whole where the parts relate to one anotherSo on and so forth- the possibilties of the term modern are endless. It's impossible to use the term 'modern design' without specifying which type you are talking about, as there are so many available definitions.
3. The IR completely turned design on its head. The production techniques that were used for hundreds of years were almost completely erased and mass production was introduced. Not only was the unique individuality of each piece lost, but the personality of each handmade creation lost along with it. Most items became uniform and went down in value. This was good and bad in that it was good because 'designer' products became more widely available to the lower pricepoints of the public and it was good because without the change created by the IR, the Arts and Crafts movement never would have come about and held onto the diminishing ways of creating a product start to finish by hand.Another bad side is that some of the designers ideas which were floating about in their heads were sure to be lost and never produced because there was no longer a large market for handmade items. I relate this situation to Valentino telling Jeanie Becker of Fashion Tevevision that although he is now retired, he still has dreams and ideas for dresses and still continues to sketch. It's sad because not only have we lost a great designer, but we as the public may never get to see the ideas he has floating around in his head become realities. They may be lost forever and the world will then lose out on many great designs. The same is true with past designers. They may have created so many more different styles and cutting edge pieces if only the IR hadn't stomped out the handmade creative outlet.
4. This course of study begins with the IR because it is SUCH a jumping point in the world of design. Not only were new styles of design created by the IR and from taking inspiration from it, but also whole design movements such as the A & C movement were established as a rebellion against the IR.
